The role

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: STREET ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
£92,826 - £111,231

This is a new role within the Council, with a remit that includes:

  • Contract management of our waste collection contractor, SERCO;
  • Environmental enforcement;
  • Commercial waste;
  • Waste action team.

There is much to be positive about in performance in key areas: we have achieved reductions in volumes of household waste and our focus is now on improving recycling rates across the borough. You’ll work closely with our contractor, and with colleagues within the team to ensure that we embed the operational and cultural changes that will impact on this key area.

It’s a role that requires a highly developed insight of current and emerging best practice and technology in the sector. Your technical expertise should be complemented by the communication and relationship management skills to foster positive working relationships with stakeholders. A highly developed understanding of how effective contract management can ensure positive partnership working and better outcomes for customers is essential. And in this highly visible service, it’s important that you understand the dynamics of working within a political setting.

It’s an ideal time to take on this role. Having recently moved away from working arrangements created during our tri-borough partnership period, we are now working to ensure that our street environmental services are absolutely tailored to our needs and priorities. You’ll play a key role in influencing this. You should be an individual who is highly motivated by delivering improvement, and be ready to get close to the detail when required, while always retaining a focus on longer term objectives.
